Would someone be able to help with the writing on this moriage vase?

I think it's Japanese and the character is 芸 (Gei), which is translated be my Japanese online translator as: technique; art; craft; performance; acting; trick; stunt.

A rare Japanese Art Nouveau style vase, so prabably circa 1900. Never seen this before, so I might be wrong calling this Japanese. Perhaps the blank vase was Japanese and the decoration European.
