Subject:green chinese bowl with flowers and blue square mark to base
Posted By: richard Mon, Oct 14, 2019 IP: 2a00:23c6:fc08:2601:

Could anyone tell me anything about this green bowl with flowers and the blue mark on it's base?

Unfortunately it is damaged (and badly repaired) which will no doubt affect it's value, if it has any.

Thank you for any information.

Kind Regards Richard

Your sgraffito floral bowl is mark & period of the Qing Jiaqing reign (1796-1820). Its "minyao" (popular kiln) mark is shown resting on its righthand side. When flipped 90-degrees left, "Jiaqing" (嘉慶) reads down in the middle in a rude form of seal script.

You're correct about the impact of damage on value. The Chinese buyers who control the market are rather intolerant of imperfections such as this. However, it makes a good archival piece for use as a basis of study.

Here are some photos of a Jiaqing-period 9.5 inch dinner plate and a 7.75-inch Qianlong-era side plate, both reign-marked. The Qianlong mark is much more readable as "Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi" (大清乾隆年製), "Made during the Qianlong Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty".

Best regards,

Bill H.
