Subject:Cloisonné Vase Pair (Foil?)
Posted By: Lou Hodgson Sun, Oct 06, 2019 IP: 86.152.80.237

Please help... I’ve searched high and low for any info on this pair of foil miniature vases... can’t find the shape or design! Does this mean that they are rare or simply reproduction? I don’t mind either way, I acquire these antiquities because I love how they look and the fact they intrigue me... value doesn’t matter, would just love to know what they are called, where and when they were made and what they are made from? Any help much appreciated!

You have a nice pair of Japanese "ginbari", (A.K.A. silver foil) cloisonné on copper mini-vases in the form of a beaker. I believe they likely are Meiji-period (1868-1912), which was a booming time for export art such as this. Probably not very rare, since I own one in the same design, measuring 2.5" H X 1.75" on top X 1.25" at the base. There a base-mark of Ota Toshiro on mine and photos of it below.

Here are other related links. You'll see that there was another cloisonné mark in use for an Ota Jinnoei but I've seen no clarification of whether it is related to Ota Toshiro or not.

Best regards,

Bill H.
