Subject:Flower Bowl Japanese - Need help please
Posted By: Michelle Gray Sun, Sep 22, 2019 IP: 2600:1700:a3a1:4010:

Can someone please translate the mark on the back of this lovely bowl. And if you know what period this would be from. Thanks so much for your help!

Your bowl is what is known as satsuma ware, made during he Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and other consecutive periods in the 20th century. This one, with the mark saying 'Shuzan' I believe, beneath the 'shimazu' family crest. I personally do not know much of this artist, but I would estimate that your bowl was produced during the Taisho period (so 1912-26) based on the style. Hopefully my suspicions will be confirmed by others on this forum, but I feel fairly certain about them.

Kind regards, Tom

Your bowl is signed 'Shūzan' (秀山 ) beneath the Shimazu (Satsuma) family crest.

I've added the link to a sold small plate bearing a similar mark and somewhat similar pattern, along with a Meiji period dating. Its $30 sale price is probably not a good comparison with your bowl's value, but its a start if you wish to take up where I left off with Google. You might also take a look at trocadero.com and liveauctioneers.com (which requires signing up to view hammer prices).

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you for your answer! So is this most likely Meiji period? I'm asking because someone responded that it was Tashio period. Is there a way to determine the date? Thanks so much.

Nice bowl, Satsuma ware, 1900-1920, the mark reads: Shuzan 秀山.
Unfortunately, I have no information about this artist.
Regards,
Martin.
