Subject:Would appreciate help identifying vase
Posted By: Anne deVilleneuve Mon, Sep 30, 2019 IP: 24.252.116.199

I would appreciate help in identifying this vase. It appears to be hand painted and gilded. I'd like to know whether it is valuable or not. Many thanks to anyone with information as to it's origin or value!

This seal script mark, shown upside-down, reads down and across from the top right when flipped as 'Zhongguo Chao Cai' (中國潮彩), 'Chaozhou Palette', or in the old days, 'Swatow Palette' (of colors). The website gotheborg.com has this one as late 20th century.

In my opinion, the vase could have hand-applied washes of colors, but the pattern otherwise probably was laid down largely by the transfer method.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you so much! Do you have any idea of it's value?

Virtually everything I know of such decorative porcelains has been learned from the negative aspect of trying to avoid mistaking them for antiques. You might be able to spot something similar by comparing the size and decoration of yours to Chinese vases sold on eBay, but this archive is heavily polluted by items misrepresented, either through ignorance or deceit, as true antiques. Thrift shops also tend to have such decorative pieces on sale, and apart from a bit of salutary exercise, I occasionally find a true antique as well.

Good luck,

Bill H.
