Subject:Big Satsuma Vase with Taizan mark but...
Posted By: Tom Tue, Oct 01, 2019 IP: 89.100.198.175

Dear
I recently bought a beautiful big satsuma vase with a bit curious mark, decorated in style kacho-e painting Kano Bairei birds and flowers - Kingfisher and Cranes it has a impressed mark Taizan on the base and red signature, which on first sight looks like an inscription by Imura zo from Yokohama.I have trouble with accurate recognizing this mark, it's quite an unusual combination Taizan and Imura zo.
I'd appreciate your help identifying this artists signature. Thanks in advance anyone who can help!
regards
Tom

The written mark reads indeed: Nippon 日本 Yokohama 横濱 Imura 井村 Sei 製 (Japan Yokohama made by Imura).
The impressed mark is too vague for me to confirm it's Taizan (帯山 or 帶山).
However, Imura worked together with others, there are marks known with Hododa & Nanpo (Satsuma ware) and Kawamoto Hansuke (Seto ware), so Taizan might be a probability.
Regards,
Martin.

Yes, pots from the Taizan kiln do find their way to Yokohama and this pair of mine are just some more that did and I have seen at least one other on a Gotheborg thread.
This is an unusual design of pot as is mine - for this pottery.

Really wonderful !!!
The paths of great ceramists intertwined.
This thread opened my eyes on Yokohama which I admit I underestimated, it turns out that was an extraordinary important place on the map during the meiji period.
It is an extremely fascinating time for me
Thank you
