Subject:Help w/ID for Antique Japanese Woodblock Print
Posted By: Jim Mon, Sep 16, 2019 IP: 73.2.14.32

hi everyone. i just found this today. it's framed and under glass. also, the matting covers part of the print. what's visible of the print measures 13 9/16" x 9 5/16". I've provided close-up pictures of the writing as well as two versions of the full print. my camera doesn't shoot well without the flash, but with it you get that burn spot in the middle. i think it's a very beautiful piece, but i don't know anything about Japanese woodblocks. i'm hoping someone out there can identify the artist, and help with dating the piece. i would love to know what the characters mean. any help will be greatly appreciated...thanks

Your print is the right panel of a diptych by Utagawa Kunisada (aka Toyokuni III). It is Station #11 Hakone: (Actor Iwai Hanshirô VI as) Hatsuhana, from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tôkaidô Road (Tôkaidô gojûsan tsugi no uchi).

You can see much of the series at the Kunisada Project at the link below (scroll down to #11):

Cheers,
Stan

WOW!!! thank you both for your help. i found this in a thrift store. it cost $8. i wonder, does anyone know how many individual prints of each of the "53 Stations" were actually originally made? i don't see that information on wikipedia. i probably need to dig further. anyway, again, thank you!
