Subject:Chinese Antique Vase (pics incl makers mark)
Posted By: John Albin Wed, Sep 04, 2019 IP: 24.121.205.32

Hi,

This vase has been in our family for over 50 years but we've lost its history. 6" vase. I've spent many hours researching without any significant success. Can you help me with the makers mark and any information of its history. It seems unique relative to all the Chinese vases I've seen on the internet. Thanks.

Your vase is not Chinese, but Japanese.
The mark reads: Kozan 香山 Sei 製 (Made by Kozan), see my picture for some more similar marks.

It's a Makuzu Kozan 1st (1842-1916) mark from around 1900.

In 1871 Kozan opened the Makuzu Kiln in Ota near Yokohama and became Mazuku Kozan 1st, a family name that continued through the 4th generation. Pieces signed "(Makuzu) Kozan" in various hands seem to have been made right up until the first decades of the 20th century. The Makuzu Kiln initially produced Satsuma-yaki style (Kyo-yaki) pottery painted in polychrome enamels and gold, but during the 1880’s it focused increasingly on the making of porcelain decorated in Chinese style.

There is more to find about Makuzu Kozan 1st on th internet.

Regards,
Martin.
