Subject:Chinese/Japanese Marks on Brass Sculpture Identification
Posted By: Miano Tue, Aug 27, 2019 IP: 122.49.209.130

Hello Friends,

Kindly assist in the identification of the Chinese/Japanese marks and indicate which period it may be attributed to.

The piece is a brass sculpture which resembles a book complete with its case/cover (in white). The last photo shows it back, which resembles a Chinese inkstone.

Any further scholarly support/identification is welcome.

Kind regards,

Miano

Yes, it is a Chinese made inkstone.
The inscription on the lid of the box,
中國歙硯 -Zhongguo sheyan - China Shexian Inkstone
Shexian is one of the four major inkstone maker districts in China (Anhui Province)

With regards,
I.Nagy

The cover reads Chinese (metal) inkstone.

The carving on the inkstone refers to a Chinese classic novel, the Dream of the Red Pavillion.

Inkstones can be made from many different kinds of materials, including metal, stone, ceramic, baked tile, and various compounds.
