Subject:Yongle Markings on Vase
Posted By: Tina Wed, Aug 21, 2019 IP: 174.219.140.84

Can anyone here verify that these are indeed Yongle markings on this vase? If so do you think this is an early period or later period? Any direction you can give me with this would be appreciated.

The four-character mark does say "Made during the Yongle Reign". However, the brass-cladding suggests this is a fairly contemporary product, possibly made in Thailand, where Bangkok has a long-established base of industries devoted to adorning Chinese and domestic ceramics with such metal protection on the rims.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you so much for your response. Does this mean the jar doesn't hold much value then.

Hi Tina,
Sorry, your item is much later copy, circa late 20th century.

So no real value to the Jar then? Or does it still hold some value as a copy? Thank you again for your help.

I don't think it's a copy of anything in particular, except for all the pieces painted identically and fired at the same kiln for sale around the world. The last jar of any similarity was one I bought about 30 years ago at the Thai decorating factory southeast of Bangkok on the road to Nakhon Pathom. I think I paid no more than US$5.00 for it. I imagine They're more expensive at their export destinations nowadays. I know that Amazon sells a few Thai ceramics, and Pinterest is lousy with them. Here's a pair of pictures. The mark reads "Ruo Shen Zhen Cang" (若沈珍藏), "Precious collection of the seemingly old."

Best regards,

Bill H.
