Subject:Requesting Signature Translation
Posted By: Sarah McCracken Mon, Jul 15, 2019 IP: 2601:58c:407f:8520:f

Would anyone be able to tell me the artist via signature? My uncle gifted this print to me. I am unable to ask him the 'where or who' about this artist as he has passed. He traveled frequently and I would love to know the artist. Thank you, Sarah

Hi,

It's not an artist signature, but the title of the printing.
The title says " Boats for enjoying the evening cool at Ryogoku(in Edo,Tokyo) ". 両国涼舟

Thank you, I appreciate your help. Now I know it is likely from Japan. That is good. The print is framed and matted so I don’t want to open it. Thanks again.

To add to I. Nagy's information, the Ryogoku Bridge is famous in Japanese woodblock prints. If you put "Japanese print Ryogoku bridge" into google you will see many prints of the bridge. Apparently, fireworks were launched from the bridge and a prime location from which to watch them was beneath the bridge.

Below is a print by Shotei Hokuju from 1809 in our collection titled "Enjoying Cool Air at Ryôgoku Bridge (Ryôgoku-bashi suzumi no fûkei), from the series Ten Views of Famous Places in Edo (Edo meisho jikkei)".

Cheers,
Stan

Thank you, Stan. The woodblock print you shared involves many details. I love the history incorporated into these beautiful pieces of art. I appreciate your time. Take care, Sarah

Hi Stan,
Oh, of course, how silly of me. Remember I still have this in a frame so only part of the total is visible. Should I leave the back paper intact? Also, I couldn't take a picture without getting a reflection. Yes, I would love any further information you might be able to share. If you can not find anything more, should I open the back? Appreciate your responses. Take care, Sarah

You don't give dimensions, but your print appears not to be a non-standard Japanese print size. My guess is that it was cut from a larger print. So, I looked for Ryogoku prints that it might have come from, but I came up empty.

Cheers,
Stan
