Subject:Expert Peter Combs stumped Hall Mark! Other Experts needed to date vase and translation
Posted By: John Sat, Jul 13, 2019 IP: 94.197.121.63

Hi I had a great man with great knowledge tell me about this vase. And he has had trouble dating it. It is said to be a Hall Mark , can anyone translate the vase. It is decorated with Rabbits and is a beautiful vase and Big at 17inches. Here is what Peter combs said on the piece - Your Chinese vase is a curious one. I suspect you were unable to find other examples.

"The decoration is very atypical, in particular the Rabbits are done very much in the manner of Japanese examples.

The mark on the base is not entirely Chinese but has elements of Japanese script as well. The loose translation is that it is a tribute to "the Hall of Everlasting or lasting ritual made for" . My suspicion is, the vase was made in China but was intended for the Japanese market. Just as Japanese potters copied regularly Chinese marks onto Arita wares, the Chinese decorators also copied at times Japanese Kanji.

As to it's age, judging by the shape, enamels and drawing of the elements composing the overall scenes I believe the piece was made after the Republic period and likely dates to the post 1960's. The basic shape is that of the Guangxu period, however the rounded body and flaring of the mouth is a bit off for examples made during that period. It is the type of vase many sell today as being of the Guangxu period though.

With all of that said, it's an interesting and worthy vase of very good quality regardleas of age"

So I wonder if the great experts here can help me. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

John

The mark is "Made in the Antique Style for the Hall of Constant Abundance" (Heng Fu Tang Bo Gu Zhi - 恒豐堂博古製). The "Heng" and "Po" characters on your vase use obscure forms of the heart radical. In my opinion, the unblemished expanse of white glaze on the bottom of your vase shows a perfection unusual for Republic or late Qing porcelains. Also, the general lack of flourishes in the characters makes them look more like they were written with a modern marking pen than a calligrapher's brush.

If you Google-search the mark in its above form I believe you'll find the mark isn't particularly rare, but versions of it on porcelains of any great antiquity may be.

Best regards,

Bill H.

My apologies, I goofed in the the first group of pinyin, saying 'Heng Fu' instead of 'Heng Feng' and compounded insult with injury to 'Bo', giving it as 'Po' in the next sentence.
