Subject:Can anyone help me identify this sculpture/statue?

Hello everyone!

Can anyone please help me with identifying this sculpture? It's from an antiquarian in beijing and probably very old. He had said that it's from a chinese temple. It's about 30cm high, hand painted and I don't have a clue what material it is of. Looks like stone and is heavy but it's definitely not stone. On few sections there is something "shining through" which looks like wood?

I hope someone has a hint or something!

Hello,

Looks like wood but is it old?

If this is from a chinese temple,where is the body ?

Buddhist don't venerate statues heads only, it is against their believe.A Buddha or Guan Ying should be with body.

Therefore, first thing to do is to see if the base of the neck was part of a statue or not.
If the base is nicely flat, for sure this is a modern representation, not an antique.

Then you have to check the weight,if it is old, it should be light. If new it is heavy. ( humidity in the wood.)

This could be a votive bust of the Chinese Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin, or of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, of whom she is a manifestation. I would think this wood-carving probably will require hands-on evaluation of age by an expert in the field.
