Subject:Great Ching Dynasty Chien Lung Porcelain Plaque Identification
Posted By: William Spencer Sat, Jun 15, 2019 IP: 67.171.130.98

Greetings from Portland, Or USA. This was purchased at an estate by my parents many years ago for much less than the tag suggests (we don’t remember). I believe that this plaque is later than the attribution on the tag, but I cannot determine anything else beyond that. I am completely ignorant and have exhausted the limited resources I have. A colleague graciously recommended Mr. Lawrance Lewis to me- and my search for him led me to this forum. We would be most grateful for any help identifying the true age of this piece and translating the text. I believe this tells a short story or poem which relates to these wonderful characters that have remained a mystery to us for so long. Thank you in advance for any help you are kind enough to offer us in unlocking the mystery..

Regards,

William

Hi Lawrence,
I do not believe your plaque is from the Qianlong period.
The overall style and quality of painting suggest to me that it is probably from the late 19th century. Based in part the way the colour naturally fades out and other.
Overall plaques are very difficult to determine said age/artist due to there being a lot of modern day copies being produced in China by some very highly skilled artist coming onto the market in the West.
Overall IMO this is a very nice example. Enjoy!

Inscriptions in my reading and rough translation,
省事三分別送福有
書一巻不為貧
Save trouble to send blessings separately
Give him a book for not to be poor
Colophone,
時在丙子夏小場
In the Year of Fire-Rat (....1936..)in the beginning of Summer
不如倚市珠山
Not leaning on the market of Zhushan*
之印 - "Zhi-yin" - Done mark
Zushan is a part of Jingdezhen city in Jiangxi province, a leading porcelaain manufacturing centre

It can be excluded that your plaque is Qianlong. It would be even better option if someone could it prove that it's from 1936.
However, someone more knowledgeable can comment !
With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I. Nagy,

Thank you so much for your assistance in unlocking the mystery behind this piece. The translation makes it all the more wonderful to us- and we had no means of obtaining this information otherwise. I can see that you are a real treasure to this forum.

Kindest Regards,

William

I don't think this is from the QianLong period. I think it dated from a far more recent time.

The Gotheborg site has a section on QianJiang porcelains, which included a great many plaques, which like yours state they were created in ZhuShan.

Gotheborg states: "Qianjiang painting on porcelain flourished in the latter half of the 19th century up to the early Republic Period around 1910. Objects decorated in this style includes brush pots, tea wares, bowls, hat stands etc where a significant proportions being flat porcelain plaques made to be fitted into screens or furniture."

A little refinement on the translation,
Save trouble to send three blessings separately
Let him have a book for not to be poor

Hello Mike,

Thank you kindly for your scholarly feedback- and for sharing the source. This in of itself is extremely valuable to an ignorant fellow who is on a mission to no longer be ignorant such as myself.

Kindest Regards,

William

This plaque is painted in the manner of Wang Qi (1884-1937), leader of the group of Jingdezhen artists called the "Eight Friends of Zhushan". Wang was copied in his lifetime and later, and this is an example of such "tributes" to him, in my opinion. Here's another such plaque with Daoist Immortals Zhongli Quan (left with fan) and Han Xiangzi (right with flute). It has the same red seal as translated here by I. Nagy, who would be most welcome to tell us whether there is a cyclical date or other relevant information in the inscription.

The plaque was attributed by its previous owner to the Palm Beach, Florida collection of American aluminum magnate Arthur Vining Davis (1867-1962).

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hey Bill,

I tried to post this last night in the wee hours and I guess I failed. I want to offer my sincere gratitude for helping illuminate the history of this plaque that we all truly enjoy in my family even though it may not be the treasured original that it might have been.

Kindest Regards,

William

William, I'm a collector in your own style. I buy what I like and like what I buy. Actually, I have one more plaque from that same Palm Beach collection and same artist, featuring Immortals Lu Dongbin and He Xiangu, the latter being the only female in the group. Here are some more pictures.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hello Bill,

Yes- my parents and I share a passion for things that resonate- values and trends are secondary to that passion. What a lovely work this one is- thank you for sharing. Regardless of being "tributes", these works are faithfully executed and full of life and character.

Cheers!

William
