Can anyone help identify the age/artist of this stunning scroll painting? I am assuming it is Japanese Kannon, but not sure. Thanks a million in advance!

Thank you! It is a very old reproduction, and upon close inspection it does look to be hand painted as with a magnifying glass I can see brush strokes it seems. Any idea when this would have been reproduced? The scroll shows a good deal of age, and painting is of high quality. Was there a period where his work was so lovingly recreated by hand?

Ding Yunpeng's work is typically highly detailed and fairly precise, two traits that make convincing close copies difficult. If he did not paint a second version of this picture from which yours was reproduced, my guess is that it is a contemporary replica generated from a high resolution image of the original that has been photoshopped to replace the original seals and inscription.

Please share how you have ascertained that "it is a very old reproduction" and the evidence of its "good deal of age" that you mention.

I'm not aware of particular artists who were fond of copying Ding's work (or times when that was common), but someone else might be, though I think we're rapidly approaching the limit of what you can reasonably expect a free forum to generate.

Thank you for your detailed response. I acquired it at an estate auction. I believe you are correct. Upon further examination it appears to be a high quality transfer of some type on the silk. It measures 35 x 17 and has a paper backing. It seems as though some is done by hand, but it may just be the printing process, as it is hard to tell since it is on silk. While it does seem old, just guessing but thinking it would maybe be 40-60 years old. Just judging from the way the paper has aged, and it has that very old paper smell. So maybe it was just a high quality reproduction using whatever printing technique they had then. Would be curious what the translation of the seals are, they are raised ink and different from the ink of the image. Maybe they would tell the story? And not sure why a reproduction wouldn't have had a copy of his signature also. Anyhow... it's a beautiful piece and better than any printed copies of paintings I have seen. No dots can be seen on great magnification.
