Subject:Antique ceramic vase with Archery warrior on horse and 3 rabbits
Posted By: Kelley Sat, Jun 15, 2019 IP: 2607:fb90:3286:f2ac:

Hi, Asian Art Forum
Could I get some help with any information on this vase? It is handpainted with relief glaze. Some of the glaze is matt finish and some is glossy. It shows an archer riding a white horse holding an arrow in his left hand and a very long bow in the other. On the other side of the vase are 3 rabbits. Is he hunting the rabbits or do the rabbits have a certain meaning, maybe good luck in battle?
The rider's attire is wonderful and the gold and blue are stunning! It looks like he is wearing a leopard skin. Do you know how the face and hand are painted? Is it a watered down black glaze? His chin strap was applied over the face so the face was fired in the kiln.
The previous owner said it was Satsuma (or similar to) and guessed it was made possibly in the 1920's. I included a photo of the stamp on the bottom---can you tell me what it says and who made the vase and if there is a story behind the pictures on it?

The marks reads: Toseizan (or Toshozan) 東正山 Zo 造 = Made by Toseizan.
Satsuma ware 1920's-1930's.

I have to leave the other questions to others on this forum.

Regards,
Martin
