Subject:Japanese ivory netsuke carver identification
Posted By: Tom Aspden Fri, May 31, 2019 IP: 51.6.20.3

Hi, could somebody please translate the mark on the bottom of this ivory netsuke, and if it is of any particular character.
Thanks very much. Tom

Well Tom, you got yourself a nice Chinese Tagua nut carving - also called plant ivory-
signature is unimportant.

I'm afraid I must disagree with you, due to the fact that it has a visible grain on the bottom. It is also at such an angle so that it is mammoth ivory.

OK, most likely you are right. I had only the pictures to go by.

What is your reason for not showing the grain, nor mentioning it in your original posting.

I had mentioned that it was ivory in the title, as well as this, I though that the grain was noticeable enough on the final picture of the base. Besides, I did not feel that the grain was of significant importance to my question, due to the fact that it was of the translation.

It is a Chinese copy.

Thank you for your opinion, what makes you think it is a copy? I know that it is unlikely to be old due to the fact that it's mammoth ivory, but I did not buy it under the misapprehension that it was anything else. I would be grateful for a development of your opinion. Tom

Here are 5 indications that it is 20th century or later:

1) The circles around the himotoshi - Just circles around the himotoshi began around the early 1900s. More elaborate circles like yours are much newer.
2) The flower pattern on the robe
3) The added color
4) The mediocre execution (see hand and feet)
5) Modern tool marks (the feet look like they were done with something like a Dremel rotary tool)

2), 3), 4), and 5) are indicators that it is quite new. A lot of modern netsukes are from China.

The lack of grain on the stomach and head are curious. When I saw the grain on the bottom, I was surprised.

Regards,
Stan

Thank you Stan, I realise that it was difficult to notice any grain on the stomach and head, but that is just due to the photographs, it is more pronounced in the flesh. In addition I had been informed by the seller that it was likely to be relatively new, so I didn't expect it to be anything else. Thanks again, Tom

Hi!

I've inherited about 80 different carved figures, but don't know anything about them (origin etc.), They definitely are vintage at least, as were collectd in the mid of XX century.

All of them are posted on this Instagram:
https://www.instagram.com/netsuke.nomad/

Could you please help me with identification?

And what do you thing the real price to sell all of them?

Regards,
Netsuke Nomad
