Subject:Ginger Jar with Four Character Mark
Posted By: James Thu, May 30, 2019 IP: 2a02:c7d:ca46:a100:1

I bought this in a hurry recently without looking up the marks first and now am unable to find anything remotely similar. Are these invented marks? Or could the jar be Japanese? There is some pitting to the glaze which made me think it is at lest 19th century but now I am not so sure. Any advice greatly received.

This jar has a four-character "Minyao" (Popular Kiln) mark of "Made during the Qianlong Reign" (Qianlong Nian Zhi - 乾隆年製) in standard script. The item probably dates from the late Qing to Republic period.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks so much for the info. Really interesting.. especially the kiln reference. I was unable to find them and certainly missed the Qianlong mark, but will make it easier for me to look for now you have pointed it out. The vase is up for auction at Criterion in London on 5th June so will be interesting to see what happens. Thanks again.
