Subject:jade plaque
Posted By: elsewyse Sat, May 18, 2019 IP: 2605:a000:1304:4232:

I was hoping to get some info about this jade plaque I purchased at an antique store. I don't have much info except the seller said he purchased it from an older gentleman whose deceased brother ran an antique store in NYC. My uneducated guess is Qing dynasty, since I found a piece auctioned at Sotheby's with almost identical dragon(?) carvings at the top: https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2016/the-muwen-tang-collection-of-chinese-jades-hk0708/lot.128.html

It's a very light greenish (not as brown as it appears-- there's a fair amount of dirt in the cracks).

I'm curious a) if it's legit; b) when it's from; c) what the carvings mean; and d) if it's worth anything. I've tried reaching out to a few dealers online but they haven't provided much detail.

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

This carving is not fine enough to be from the Ching dynasty,

Thanks for the response! :) Would you mind going into a little more detail about why you say that, and when you do think it might be from?

If you look at the facial expression and the hands of the figures you will see that they lack fine details one would expect from a plaque from Qing period.
The plaque is IMO dating from the later 20th century.

That's interesting to hear, because the linked image seems (to me at least) to have about the same level of facial expression and hand details. But again, I'm definitely not an expert!

The reason I'm pressing is because I've had 3 offers for it for $800, $1200 and $4k. The latter two offers were from the same person (a reputable dealer) and it just seems odd to me that there was such a huge jump over the course of a few days (they said they had a client interested). I'd like to know more before I agree to sell.

The image you have posted is from where? Perhaps you could post a full link etc?
Given what ernest and myself think the age is, it is a really good price being offered $4000 (US?). I take it you paid much less?
If I owned it, I would be happy.

I did have a look at the plaque sold by Sotheby's, lot # 128 that sold for HK $125,000.
The over all carving style is far superior than your one along with the poem and border! Even the depth of hands and face are far superior/life-like both in style and carving than yours.
I understand it can be difficult sometimes to tell the difference. You could send a picture to Sotheby's/other for further opinion in order to put your mind at ease.
