Subject:Sumi-e The monk wants to cut off the tail of the cat?
Posted By: Yura Wed, May 15, 2019 IP: 176.106.204.132

Dear forum members
I'm trying to determine the author of the picture where the monk wants to cut the tail of the cat
Perhaps this is a plot of a Japanese or Chinese parable, moral???
Thanks in advance, Yura

曽畫 - Sō-ga - Picture of Sō
并(居)- Hei(kyō)- I am not sure with the 2nd character - Other pseudonym

Presumably、 Masunaga Itsumin 増永逸眠 1902-?
Sō 曽 was his pseudonym
Kumamoto prefecture born Nanshuga (literati) painter. Pupil of Chiba Kinitsu 千葉琴逸
In lack of reference seal and signature prints I can't say it sure.

From my Japanese literature readings I can't recall anything relevant story which is represented on this picture. However, according to Japanese popular fallacy the natural tendency of cats is become goblins, and this tendency to methamorphosis can be checked only by cutting off their tails in kittenhood.
Only the cat and the venomous serpent wept not at the death of Buddha, and these shall never enter into the bliss of the Gokuraku (Paradise).

With regards,
I.Nagy

With the greatest respect to I Nagy's vast knowledge, I fear that reading of the Zen classics is perhaps not as wide.

The picture of the monk and the cat is most probably related to this story:-

Thank You,
To be honest, I rather prefer e.g. Asada Jirō to
the Zen classics
Cheers,
I.Nagy

Thank you very much for the author's identification dear Mr. I. Nagy.
The picture came to Europe before 1939.
If the artist was born in 1902 then everything is alright.
Unfortunately, I did not find anything about Masunaga Itsumin on the Internet
Best wishes, Yura
