Subject:Marking, Authenticity, & Other Queries Jade Dragon? Vase
Posted By: Jemmie Thu, May 16, 2019 IP: 2601:643:8301:1500:3

Hello all, I recently came into possession of what I believe to be a Chinese Carved jade vase with either foo dogs or dragons as side handles. My questions are whether anyone recognizes the marking on the bottom, does this piece look authentic, or perhaps a reproduction? And does anyone have more info on a piece like this? I’m curious about it. ;)

I colorized the marking on the bottom to help in identifying, the Mark is rather light and hard to see.

Thank you!

First, do the scratch test , with a strong needle, using enough pressure, make a 2-3 mm scratch. It will be white or black. Tell us which color.

I didn’t even think to do the scratch test. Just did it and a small white line was indeed scratched onto the bottom. It threw me as it’s so heavy and stays cold even next to the heater!

Looks to be soapstone. Jade does not scratch so easily without very firm pressure from a hard instrument. Also chips on base are what soapstone chips look like.
