Subject:Satsuma Vase
Posted By: Julie R. Tue, May 14, 2019 IP: 96.232.131.183

Greetings,

Opinion sought with validating information with regard to a Satsuma vase. Vase is supposedly Circa 1790-1840 from Satsuma Island, Kyūshū Japan. Information based on a statement from the antique house at the time it was purchased, September 1968. Vase is marked under lid, stand but not on bottom of vase.

Thank you so much!!

This is a Kyoto Satsuma vase, marked: Dai 大 Nippon 日本 - Nishida 西田 Zo 造 = Great Japan - made by Nishida.
I seriously doubt the date 1790-1840. Before 1840, artisans in Japan were not allowed to put their own name on ceramics. Dai Nippon is an indication that this is made in the Meiji Period (1868-1912).
I added 2 other similar marks from Nishida, the items date from around 1880, which in my opinion is the same with your vase.
Regards,
Martin.

Thank you Martin for your response. Although, having documentation that states something different, I didn't quite believe it. Hence presenting at this forum.

The characters are 大日本西田造 (Dai Nippon Nishida Zo), "Made by Nishida, Imperial Japan". Gotheborg.com has the same mark in red and identifies it as a Meiji Period Kyoto Studio.

Best regards,

Bill H.
