Subject:HUANGHUALI TABLE?

I have a pair of these tables given to us from an uncles estate. Can anyone identify this table? Thank you in advance.

Elm, not huanghuali.


Color can be similar in both woods. But HH is a very hard / dense wood with a lustrous fine grain with dark highlights.

The grain on your table is course, loose. And the wood is comparably much softer, so lacks the lustrous finish of HH.

Tim - Thank you for your response. I understand what you're saying about the lustre of the wood grain. I actually have a cabinet with that type of wood inlay. I'll post separately. Would you mind taking a look and giving your opinion? We inhereted several pieces of chinese art and furniture, not knowing much about them, obviously.

On a side note, do you think you could estimate a value on this elm table?

Except for very early & rare designs, in today's market there is not much value with collectors, but I've seen these tables sell upwards of $800 and some into the very low thousands in the designer market - their criteria for price often reflects the size of their clients wallet more so than the quality or rarity of the piece.Keep posting pics...I'll do my best to help...and so will others in this forum.

Actually more likely this is Chinese Locust wood - looks a bit like Elm but the grain tends to be darker and much more pronounced.
