Subject:Netsuke - can anyone tell me about this piece?

I purchased this Netsuke at a thrift store in a bag of miscellaneous items for less than $3. I’m not sure of what material it is made or if it is a considered a good one. My husband thinks he sees grain in it but I don’t see it ...and I originally thought it was plastic. Is the bottom an actual signature or just some squiggles made to look like a signature? Any information given to me will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

From what I can see, this is a Tagua nut carving, most likely made in China.

Thank you for that helpful information. I am still wondering about the mark or signature on the bottom and the age... I would think it is a recent piece?

I would say that in app. 80 years it will be called an antique.
