Subject:Old Chinese painting, asking who is the painter?
Posted By: Monique Rosa Sat, Apr 13, 2019 IP: 2001:980:57ae:1:a59b

Hi i also have this Chinese painting. It looks really old if you see the silk border. Are these kind of paintings originated scrolls?
It is a painting on silk. Maybe someone can tell me who the painter might be.

Your painting is Japanese, however painted in Chinese style.
Inscriptions read,
行年六十九歳 - Sixty-nine years old
烏翁法橋 興也筆 - Uō (Karasu Okina) Hokkyō Kōya-hitsu -Painted by Uō Hokkyō (Crow Old Man the Bridge of Law*) Kōya
Lower seal,
興 - Kō
Painter's name: Kanō Kōya 狩野興也( -1671)
Second son of Kanō Kōi 狩野興以、painter of Mito
branch of the Tokugawa clan.
(* In the Edo period famous painters were alowed to use Buddhist titles like in this case "hokkyō")

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you very much for the research! I have a small collection of old paintings hanging on my wall and I really like to know who the painter has been.
Thank you very much again and have a wonderful day.

"I'm not a professional artist, but I love and am fond of painting.
I know that the Chinese used not to use picture frames but to transport pictures in scrolls."

For us, this is very strange, but if you think about it, this is a very convenient method. Scrolls are much easier to transport and paintings are better preserved. A friend of mine used to be into Chinese painting and recommended this website to me by influential artists. Your paintings are very reminiscent of the names of ancient Chinese artists, it's fantastic.
