The variant character "摹" for "imitation" is in the Unicode/Unihan data base as U+6479 with pinyin given as "mó" and meanings "trace, copy, duplicate; pattern". It's also No. 4588 in my Mathews CED with pinyin indicated to be "mú".
The "(a)" subheading under "摸" in Mathews provides the following:
"To trace, for which 摹 No. 4588 generally is used.
摹本 a traced copy."
Looks to me like a matter of mostly insignificant semantical differences.
