Subject:Chinese Emperor Fan Painting
Posted By: Monique Rosa Tue, Apr 09, 2019 IP: 2001:980:57ae:1:9ff:

Hello, i have this fan hanging on my wall. The image made me curious. It looks like the cosplay from emperor Yongzheng (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/life/2009-02/24/content_11890465.htm.)
So i hope that there is someone who knows more about this kind of paintings. How old are they? And maybe there is someone who can translate a bit of the seals.
Thanks for your help.

This is a good quality picture that's not in the best condition, probably 19th century, could be earlier. Rather than depicting an emperor in another guise, the central figures appear to be dressed in theatrical costume. Someone else may recognize source of the scene being depicted.

The upper seal on the right seems to read 慧松, probably belonging to a woman who owned the picture at some point. Can't make out the other one entirely but it too is most likely a collector's seal.

Dear Rat,

Thanks a lot for your help! I really appreciate. When i bought the picture, i was really curieus about the origin of the fan.
Is it possible that it is from the same period as the cosplays of the emperor Yongzeng? (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/life/2009-02/24/content_11890465.htm) Or are these kind of fans quite normal in the 19th century?

For now have a good evening,

Kind regards,

Yes, I think it's possible this is an 18th century painting too. However, it would be difficult to narrow it down to the Yongzheng reign without substantial additional research on the style of court painters and leading professional painters of that time. It's of good quality.

Thanks again for the explanation! Soon I will try to get in touch with a researcher. Maybe from a Chinese museum.

Kind regards,

Monique Rosa
