Subject:Small Cup - Doesn't look Chinese or Japanese
Posted By: Jack Fri, Mar 01, 2019 IP: 2a02:c7d:2a2d:7500:4

Good afternoon all.
This small (8cm tall) ceramic cup is covered with writing. However, the text does not look Chinese or Japanese to me.
Can somebody please clarify the country or origin and whether the signature/stamp on the base is identifiable with regards to the maker/date?
Thank you.
Jack.

Japanese, ca 3rd quarter 20th century, Kutani mark.

Best regards,

Bill H.

It's a Japanese cup, I'm pretty sure the mark is Kutani 九谷 (from right to left). See picture.
The bleu mottled pattern is called "Ao Chibu", which means “blue dots” and is a typical Kutani pattern. Maker: unknown. Date: stamped marking, so I guess 1920's / 1930's.
Regards,
Martin.

Japanese, Kutani.

Kutani have produced a number of items with this blanket of calligraphy, mostly tea cups that I have seen.

The signature (or title) appears to read 高砂, but I could be wrong.

Your cup is Japanese,
I could identify the inscription starting on the left side (Pic.1)
Title,
高砂 - Takasago
高砂,此の舟の帆を....Takasago,kono fune no ho wo...
From Takasago sailing over....
Its is well known song from the traditional Noh play

羽衣 - Hagoromo (The Feather Mantle) is the title of the other song.

The first character of the bottom marking is missing, ...堂 ....dō

With regards,
I.Nagy
