Subject:Archaic Horse.
Posted By: Allen Miller Fri, Apr 27, 2018 IP: 223.229.195.219

Is this piece Chinese?
Have shown this piece to two reputed gemstone labs and both said they could not certify as they were not able to identify the stone.
Any opinions what stone could this horse be made of and any other feedback.

Let us have a look.
First, using a strong needle, make a tiny scratch, 2-3 mm. using enough pressure until you see a white or black line
Tell us the color. . . this is most likely all we need to help you

Thanks Ernest for your guidance.
Well I did exactly as advised by you and this is what took place.
There was a white residue line but on wiping it with a soft cloth it was exactly back to what it was earlier no white line, residue or scratch.
Hoping to get some further information and guidance from you regarding this piece.
Regards
Allen.

There is some sort of coating. Still, do the scratch test with more pressure. You are too gentle.

Hi Ernest,
I have not posted the photographs of the scratch test earlier.
I am posting them for your reference today.
I have scratched the base very hard with a sharp metal scissors and have posted one photo after the
scratching and the second one after wiping the scratch.

Appears to be a modern piece that was made by serpentine (with a very small chance to be nephrite) that can be scratched and with artificial white weathering on its surface that was created by chemical to make it look archaic. Unfortunately neither its material nor carving quality indicate it was anything but modern. A scratch test (recommended by Ernest) will confirm its material. Thanks for sharing and no disrespect intended.

Thanks Super for giving your opinion.
To be honest as mentioned earlier I myself don’t know the origin, age or of which stone the horse is made.

Allen

Hello

I don't think this job is old, the bones of the animal's mouth are salient, the sculpture does not seem to me delicate enough to be old, I have even a big doubt about the fact that it is jade, these powdery marks make me think that it is ' Another stone closer to the soap stone
