Subject:Need advice on this Chinese Jiaqing marked Bowl !
Posted By: Mitko Sun, Feb 24, 2019 IP: 92.35.113.140

Hello everybody! I did quite a research on this bowl and even found another piece made probably by the same hand but still not sure if it is of the times that is marked for. Also I was wondering if this is the so called "orange peel" glaze as there are not many good pictures online for reference. Thanks in advance!
Best regards!

The painting style on this bowl doesn't compare to norms of the Jiaqing reign, which in large measure upheld the Qianlong period's reputation for high quality porcelain. The bowl is rather worn, and the dull green in its wucai (five-color) palette looks like it was overcooked in the kiln or suffered a failed restoration. Of course, the Civil War and later resistance to Japanese invaders visited their share of privations on porcelain-making in China until the Republic Period ended in 1949.

As to a date for your bowl, Tony Allen's latest book, "Allen's Antique Chinese Porcelain -- The Detection of Fakes" Jan 2016 2nd Edition), states a rule of thumb, holding that fake Jiaqing marks didn't appear until the very end of the Qing Dynasty, and that most date to the Republic era. Based on the physical characteristics and that rule of thumb, I believe your bowl probably is Republic.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hello Bill! Thanks for your opinion- I really appreciate it! I agree that it may be a more recent than the period of the mark as it is with most Chinese porcelains. The bowl does't seem to be of the best quality. It may not be fired properly or it was desired effect, but failed restoration is out of question. I was just wondering if the porcelain manufacturing in China during the periods you mention was that centralized so that every manufacturer adhered to the same quality norms and used the same techniques and materials ( i. e ( pastes, glazes and enamels) when executing a certain motive?
Like for example your bowl is certainly made by another manufactory, using different materials.
Here is an example of the same producer I found earlier .

Here are a couple of pictures of a circa 1820 unmarked nine-dragon soup plate, showing the prevailing dragon style of the period, which included the late Jiaqing reign.
