Subject:Maker's Mark Large Temple Jars Elephant Handles ?
Posted By: Greg James Sat, Feb 23, 2019 IP: 2600:1700:b392:4730:

Hi. I have two very large temple jar vases. Not sure if they are Chinese or Japanese. Maker's mark tends to have some elements of the Ch'ien-Lung Mark but the mark also has some other elements I do not understand. Any idea of age, nationality of vases or the meaning of the mark on the bottom of one of the vases. Only one of the vases/temple jars has a mark. Areas of raised gilt especially in cartouche areas. Thanks for your interest and any assistance.

A somewhat similar form of mark (Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi - Made during the Qianlong Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty) is shown in the gotheborg.com archives as modern, not older than the 70s. In my opinion, the palette used on your vases has more than a passing resemblance to wares made under the "Royal Satsuma" label, which also are modern Chinese products.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you very much Bill for your informative message. Now that I know that the leviathan pair are not Imperial ware I don't know what to do ... too large to ship, too big for paperweights, and too ugly to have hanging around ..ha ha ...once again, thanks.
