Subject:Satsuma pottery
Posted By: Pam Thu, Dec 27, 2018 IP: 2603:9000:e70a:4700:

Hi, my father passed away recently and was very fond of Asian art. Inside this vase he tucked an article about Satsuma pottery that he had cut out of the paper. I've read a lot about Satsuma pottery and I'm not so sure this is it.
If anyone knew about this vase, I'd really appreciate knowing more about it.

Hallo Pam,

In my opinion this is not a Satsuma vase, the decoration and the colors are just not Satsuma-like. No idea what it actually is.
Questions:
- Porcelain or earthenware?
- Is there no mark on the bottom?
- Is it possible to place a picture of the bottom of the vase?
Perhaps then I can tell more.
Regards,
Martin.

Thank you so much for your response Martin. There is no identifying marks on the bottom but I've attached a photo of it for you.

I do have many other items from him. Some Ivory statues, figures, bronze sculptures. Are they something you have knowledge of as well or just the pottery?

Pam,

I just know only something about Japanese pottery.
The picture of the bottom is very interesting because one can see a spur mark. Spur marks (mostly 1, 3 or 5 or even more) are found on old Japanese vases and plates. So I guess this vase is from somewhere around the late 19th or earlier 20th century.
Regards,
Martin.

Well that's something I didn't know! Thank you for that. I suppose I should look for an appraiser that knows Japanese pottery. Its a beautiful vase anyway, the colors are vibrant and deep. I'm probably going to keep it because of its beauty. Obviously my father did.
Thanks again.
Pam
