Subject:Assumed to be a spoon rest.
Posted By: Kevin Sherlock Fri, Dec 21, 2018 IP: 4.14.233.16

This piece has been with me for many years. I think it to be either a spoon rest or chop stick holder, but you guys are the experts.
I'm interested in translation and artist identification if you please. Sorry for the poor picture of the snowy scene it holds but if necessary I can try to get a better shot.

The translation of the inscription on the pen-pillow,
斷雲低渡木 飛閣欲浮空
甲戌季秋月
於珠山
Scattered clouds are moving low above the trees,
high rise pavilions want to float in the air
Year of Wood-Dog (1934) Season Autumn Month
In Zushan (Disctrict of Jingdezhen city)
Seals,
Starting seal; 仁作 Renzuo (Made by Kindness)
Seals under the colophon are illegible due to reflection
Seal on the bottom,
希平蘆 - Xiping-lu (Xiping reed)
Xiping was one of the pseudonyms of Wang Dafan 1888-1961 the famous porcelain painter of the Republic era.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Great information. With little research I find Wang Dafan's work is fairly popular.
Are you saying the pen pillow was created in 1934?
It is in excellent condition if that is true.
I will continue to try and determine value but so far no item is even close to this piece.
Thank you for your translation.

On Wang Dafan (王大凡 - 1888-1961) period works, this basemark in seal script actually was meant to be read in four characters as "Xi Ping Cao Lu" (希平草廬) - "Thatched hut with a hope for peace", which was Wang's studio name. Wang was best known for figural paintings, whereas one of his early contemporaries, He Xuren (何許人 - 1882-1941) was the master of snow-covered landscapes. This suggests to me that this dish may be a modern attribution to Wang.

Best regards,

Bill H

P.S., Sorry to rain on your parade again, Sherlock, but those 2014 comments (link) remain valid. :)

Well I must say I'm a bit embarrassed. My memory and record keeping are failing. No wonder when the Wang Dafan name came up it sparked a single neuron in my head. Sorry to waste your time repeating yourself.

Well, I guess we're even. I'd forgotten you had a first name. Must be the Christmas spirits. :)
