Subject:Japanese "basket" dish
Posted By: julie Fri, Nov 16, 2018 IP: 2600:1700:cf30:65f0:

hi
Another dish found in my parent's estate. Any info and/or maker identity etc would be appreciated.
Also wondering if/where you can order replacement handles?
Thanks!

Satsuma ware made by Gyozan 暁山, Gyozan Kyoto pottery, a family pottery, 1920's 1930's.

Okada Gyozan (Gyouzan) and his studio are well known for their work with Kiyomizu (old Kyoto) Satsuma. Gyozan Kiln has its origins in the 17th century. Around the beginning of the 18th century Gyouzan Kiln was listed by the Emperor’s family as one of the 5 fine kilns of Kyoto.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the company began to export the reproductions of Ninsei, Kenzan and other original Kyo-Satsuma ware under the name of Gyozan to the USA and Europe.
Regards,
Martin.

The original handles were most likely bent bamboo strips or grape stems and they would be very hard to find in the U.S. Plastic wrapped wire handles are usually available in Asian stores as replacements for tea pot handles.

Thanks Roger
I'll check out my Asian market or maybe I can make something similar if I end up keeping it.
