Subject:Old Chinese Gold and Jade Necklace
Posted By: TR Sat, Nov 24, 2018 IP: 173.239.230.17

Can anyone please assist with information about this Chinese Gold and Jade necklace, bought yesterday at a local garage sale for $10. It's in excellent condition with no loss at all to the jade, and just a few twisted wires to the gold links. The gold is unmarked which makes me think it's probably a vintage piece, and tests between 14k and 18k. Any assistance very gratefully received.

I like the color of the jades on your jade necklace, especially the larger "jade ring" (pendant) at the bottom. I believe they can be made of nice jadeite, but without looking or testing them, I cannot be 100% sure. The color of the "gold" does look kind of odd and I could not remember any modern Chinese gold jewelries would be made of anything but 24K or 18K gold. But if you had tested it (by a credible jeweler?)and confirmed that it was 14-18k gold then just the gold content alone would be worth your purchase price of $10. Its workmanship, IMHO, is also very good. Therefore I believe this is a very nice piece based on your low-resolution pictures, thank you for sharing. Super

Thanks very much for your reply.

I've been back and spoken to the householders from whom I bought it, who told me that they think the piece had been brought back from Burma after WW2 by their father who was stationed there. The gold was a bit dirty, but it's cleaned up quite nicely. I've now had the links retested, and as you surmised, they are actually 18k gold, although each link is slightly different. Thanks again for your help.

Great piece, untreated Burmese jadeite and handmade gold links. I'd say it's worth over 5k. Great find!!
