Subject:Help with understanding painting
Posted By: LeAnn Sat, Oct 27, 2018 IP: 75.166.132.251

I picked up this painting years ago at a garage sale. I love it. It is also probably a painting of a painting of a painting but I'm having a hell of a time identifying its story. It depicts a battle on horseback between what looks like two camps in a valley along side a river. I'm not so interested in who painted is as much as what it is about but will take all the info I can get. My guess on medium is a watered down acrylic type paint on a four panel folding screen with what I think are metal hinges but I can't see them. Interesting details is one of the military personnel brought his young son into battle, there appears to be a fallen flag, a leader facing off with two horseback spear men with double blades and a banner man. It has lovely detail on horses and clothing. A slight use of perspective on the river. There is a stamp but with what little I know, these don't necessarily identify anything. Not even sure where this is from. more photos in replies

Dear LeAnn,

The only clue to the battle scene is the partly readable inscription on the flag on the ground. On the flag I can read the name Yan Ming (晏明.
Name of a general of Cao Hong, who was killed in the Battle of Changbanpo. The battle was fought between Liu Bei and Cao Cao in 208.
However, general Yan Ming is a fictional character in the Romance of Three Kingdoms.

With regards,
I.Nagy
