Subject:ogura hyakunin isshu?
Posted By: Jessie K Wed, Oct 24, 2018 IP: 98.179.182.192

Greetings,
I recently picked up this piece because I like the image and since there was a little bit of information on the back, I started trying to research it. Is it indeed a part of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu? If so, does anyone know which one and who the artist is? Age? Although the frame is new, the paper looks to be old. Thank you in advance for your time and knowledge.

Your Japanese woodblock print is by Kuniyoshi and was printed in 1849.

Cheers,
Stan

The pictures are too small and out of focus to read the inscriptions on them. Barely can read the inscription on the label,
Inscription on the label,
廣重画 - Picture of Hiroshige
小倉擬百人一首 - Parody of the Ogura One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets
中納言家持 - Chunagon Yakamochi

(Yakamochi's poem is the 6th among the 100 poems)

If we believe in the inscription on the label
it is a work of Hiroshige. However, for sure I
would like to see a better photo on the picture itself.

With regars,
I.Nagy

For others reference, below is a larger version of your print. If it is one of the 100 poems, it should have a poem in the top 1/3 of the print. For example, one from our collection at the bottom.

Cheers,
Stan

Dear Stan,
Thanks for the larger version of prints.
Now, everything is clear.
The script on the label was deceptive.
Signature,
一勇齋 - Ichiyusai -Pseudonym
國芳画 - Picture of Kuniyoshi
Title of print,
阿古屋 - Akoya
Name of courtisan Akoya from the Kabuki play "Dan no Ura Kabuto-Gunki"

With regards,
I.Nagy

The 100 Poems prints are at the link below. If you click on the thumbnails, it takes you to larger pix and more details. The series was done by Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, and Hiroshige.

Here is another of ours by Hiroshige.

Cheers,
Stan
