Subject:Chinese Cloisinne Unable to Identify
Posted By: Malcolm Wed, Oct 17, 2018 IP: 2607:fea8:e3a0:6c9:b

I sold 2 circa 1900 closinne vases last year but this jar has me stumped. It was my mothers and she told me its very valuable but gave no other information. I cant find any marks on it identifying age, maker, or where its from. One of my ancestors was a British ship's captain sailing goods from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to mainland China early 1800s and believe it may have been one of the items he had. I havent been able to find anything similar. Its 2.5" high and diameter of 2" at widest part. Its not in perfect shape but I believe that may be from age and not lack of care. Any help would be appreciated.

This is definitely not cloisonné. Rather I think you will find that it is an interesting example of what is called Canton enamel. Good that there is apparently very little damage, as these objects often suffer greatly from the bumps and drops of time.

Thanks. it makes sense now that I look at it again and against Canton enamels I see online. I was told by an antique dealer that it was cloisinne when he looked at it however it was not like the other cloisinne pieces I had so I was perplexed. Now I can go down a different path researching it to try and determine date and other things about its history. Thanks for your input
