Subject:Questions on this Japanese vase
Posted By: Nat Sat, Oct 13, 2018 IP: 2600:1702:10b0:7560:

What do I have here? My mother purchased this porcelain (rather thin) vase in Japan circa mid-1990's. Is this Satsuma?

Please note metal inlays. Perhaps something to be gained from the markings?

Please help!! I'm sending a total of six pictures, the latter three as a reply.

Thank you, Nat

Your 'Japanese' vase was made in China's famous JingDeZhen area, famous for centuries for porcelain.

Fish are seen as auspicious as the Chinese word for fish Yu 魚 is a homophone with the Chinese word Yu 余 which means surplus, abundance, etc.

The mark reads down and across from the top right as "Made in China at Jingdezhen" (Zhong guo jing de zhen zhi). I don't recall seeing this mark in black before, but the style of the vase suggests to me that it might date to the 1960's. The website gotheborg.com dates Chinese porcelains with red and blue versions of the same mark to the 1970's.

The black borders on the vase are applied by printed transfers, while the ornamental carp and waterweed may have been hand-painted or at least hand-colored. I can't tell if the inscription is handwritten or not. It seems to be a verse concerning the colorful fish and the blue-green water. The red seal reads down as "Zhushan" (Pearl Mountain), another name for the porcelain-making town, Jingdezhen.

The vase certainly is an interesting decorative and conversation piece, but apparently lacking a famous artist's mark, probably doesn't have great intrinsic value.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Chinese Jingdezhen made porcelain.
Inscription,
紫鱗煥彩 - Purple scales, shining colors
娵嫏姿 - The appearance of fishes
碧水澄陂 - A pond of clear water
群魚樂 - Happy group of fishes
Seal signature,
珠山 - Zhushan - Name of a part of Jingdezhen
Bottom mark,
中國景徳鎮製 - Made in China Jingdezhen
I think it was an export made item from the
70-es.

With regards,
I.Nagy
