Just a quick note on Chinese, Japanese and Korean writings.
At one time, all writing in those three countries used only Chinese characters. The Japanese developed a supplementary system of phonetic symbols (kana) to use with the Kanji (漢字 - Chinese characters) to allow the accurate writing of the spoken Japanese language, which is very different in syntax to Chinese.
Korean is written in Hangul, a phonetic system that creates syllabic elements which look a little like Chinese characters. The Hangul system was invented in the 15th century by the emperor Sejong.
However, in both Japan and Korea, Chinese characters continue to be often used in artistic efforts, paintings, calligraphies and personal signatures and seals, as they are considered to show a higher level of culture.
