Subject:Chinese (or Japanese) Ink Drawing - Help with reading?
Posted By: Thomas K Mon, Oct 08, 2018 IP: 222.153.250.236

Hi all,
I got this painting in Japan during my last trip there. The style definitely seems Chinese to me, but it could be Japanese given where it was bought and that some of the faces seem possibly Japanese in style as opposed to Chinese. I've had a go at deciphering the seals, but didn't get any further than the '川' on the biggest seal. I also thought the written character in black ink might be '濟', but the central radicals seem different (maybe it's a variant character??). If anyone more knowledgeable on Chinese characters and art could help with any of the inscriptions, or even identify the artist, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Thomas.

NB: Those white marks in the photo aren't on the painting, they're just reflections off the glass (sorry for my terrible photos)

Inscription and seals,
濟 - Sai
Seals,
濟門 (済門)- Saimon
苦居 - Kukyo (Awkward residence) - Pseudonym
川樂 - Senraku (River enjoyment) - Leisure seal
洄遠 - Kaien - (Far Upsteam) - Another leisure seal.
Unfortunately, the seal on the left top is too small to read.

The only clue from aboves is Saimon.
Saimon Bundō 濟門文幢 1825-1905 was a known calligrapher monk of Buddhist Rinzai sect.
On the net I could find only one painting praise calligraphy from him with different pseudonym and seal.
All this doesn't mean that it can be stated that he painted this picture.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Hi I Nagy,

Thanks so much for reading the characters for me! It’s nice to have a starting point to do some research off of now.

Thanks,
Thomas.
