Subject:Please help identify Japanese signed wood sculpture
Posted By: JayC Sun, Sep 30, 2018 IP: 2601:280:c400:6cba:c

I believe this is Jurojin, one of the Japanese 7 dieties; and representing Longevity. He is beautifully carved but, unfortunately, missing his right hand, (and a bit of his foot, etc.). The fellow stands about a foot high and has calligraphy, on th bottom, that I think is a poem but has been rubbed so much that piecing it together may be difficult. He is also marked...but I can't read the signature. I wood really appreciate any help confirming his identity, perhaps translating the poem and the signature. Thank you!

The inscription is so faded that it is hard to read. What I can surely read is,
文政十亥 - 10th Year of Bunsei -Year of Pig - (1830)
八幡社 ⅹ御 x.... Hachimansha x go (Hachiman Shrine x go x....

2nd Pic. (Deep engraved mark)
豊久 - Toyohisa - Name of carver

i could not find wood-carver with this name from the above mentioned period.

With regards,
I.Nagy焌

I'm sorry, I wrote a thank you for all this wonderful information a few days ago but apparently it didn't get posted. I really appreciate the translation. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the 10th Year of Bunsei-Year of the Pig - 1827? under the reign of Ninko-Tenno? Lastly, is it possible the name could be translated "Tomohisa"? He wasn't known as a wood carver but he was a well-known artisan of the late Edo period. (Here I am most likely reaching but it would be nice to have an attribution to a known artist.)

Again, I.Nagy...thank you for this tremendous help!!

(I've included some additional close-up photos including a non-glaring pic of the inscription. I don't know if it's any better but at least it isn't reflecting the sun.)
