Subject:2 Porcelain pieces Japanese or Chinese?
Posted By: Tom W. Sun, Sep 09, 2018 IP: 184.98.113.171

The blue and white piece appears to be Chinese to me, but I'm wondering if it might actually be Japanese. The Yellow ground piece also looks Chinese to me but once gain, I'm wondering if it is actually from Japan. It shows a hint of iridescence in the glaze.
I am guessing both pieces date to the late 19th or 20th century but my knowledge is obviously limited and this is only a guess. Any help with origin and date on these would appreciated.

I will post three more pictures in a reply to this post.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Tom,

I think both are japanese and both are 20th. century.
Your B/W lidded bowl has a well known theme called boy(s) chasing butterflies which was original Chinese but became (also) populair when Hirado started to use the theme.

The other one with yellow ground is (rather modern) Kutani. Thats also what the mark says.

Regards,
Arjan

FYI, here's a link to pictures of a Japanese "abalone" dish of mine with a mark that appears to be Hirado, if my reading of the seal script (平戸衛) is correct. The translation may be something like "Hirado Garrison", but this is coming from a Chinese dictionary. This item came out of Japan after World War II with a member of the occupation force, so I'm thinking it dates to about the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1912-mid-century. Maximum distance across the top rim is about 7 inches. Has a small kiln crack on the upper rim, otherwise in good shape. I've posted images of this dish before, but these are new, hopefully better photos, which should lend a sense of how your bowl compares to one that is hand-painted.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Both are Japanese. The yellow lidded cup is KuTani. The donburi has a very common boys playing pattern.

Both look 20th C to me.
