Subject:wide watercolor signature help needed
Posted By: lori Wed, Aug 01, 2018 IP: 100.1.77.203

I have what appears to be a watercolor measuring about fifty (50) inches wide (sight)

I couldn’t fit the entire image in the frame, but I am showing most of it.

The chopmark and the signature is as positioned correctly, I believe, although the picture had been hanging vertically.

I don;t know if it is something of value or just decorative.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Signature.
八大山人寫 - Painted by Bada Shanren
Seal,
八大山人 - Bada Shanren

Bada Shanren 八大山人 pseudonym of Zhu Da 朱耷 1626-1705, very famous ink-wash painter and calligrapher
Serious investigation would be needed to determine if it is genuine.

With regards,
I.Nagy

The signature and seal read 八大山人. The seal is correct, and BaDa did occasionally add that fifth character to his signature.

Though hard to tell from the photographs, this could be a reproduction, possibly woodblock from a studio such as RongBaoZhai in Beijing. or the similar studio in Tianjin.

If genuine, this would probably be classified as a significant cultural treasure by the Chinese Government.

Looks attractive. The signature and seal purportedly belong to Zhu Da / Bada Shanren, but he didn't do this painting (or depict bananas, flowering plum, and bamboo)

Thank you all for your help!

Perhaps one of you could tell me how to go one step further in authenticating this or perhaps even how I determine the age of it.

Would there be something else embossed in the paper such as a watermark maybe?

lori,
the seal on your painting is a forgery. When
compared to Bada's original seal the shape of
stone used for the seal is wrong. The characters
are close, but it is a facsimile of the original.
