Subject:Bowl Id. Help
Posted By: Lance W Frazer Tue, Jul 03, 2018 IP: 2601:204:4001:3df5:8

In need of experts' help on a small (6 1/2 inch) Chinese porcelain bowl. Seems well-made, although there are some holes in the glazing. I'm guessing it's probably mid-20th century or thereabouts, but it's only a guess. Would greatly appreciate help with the seal on the bottom (part of which is damaged, so may not be legible). I'd like to find out when it was made, and who the artist was. My thanks as always for the help.

This bowl has the decoration typical of wares made for export to the Straits Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. When flipped 180 degrees as shown, the stamped shop mark in seal script will read from the top right down and across as "Made by Zhou Shunxing" (Zhou Shun xing zao - 周順興造).

This mark is illustrated in "Straits Chinese Porcelain - A collector's Guide" (1983) by Ho Wing Meng". The author expresses a belief that this and other shop marks shown in the book were on wares produced at the very end of the Qing dynasty or later, up through about the 1920's, when many of the shops went out of business because of the civil war.

Here are photos of a smaller bowl in a variant palette with the same mark.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Lance,

The artist? … you will never found out. The mark is a factoryname; " ….? Shun Ding Zao". What you have is (a kind of) -so called- straits porcelain.
I think your dating isn't far of.

Arjan

Hi Lance
This is a lovely piece of Nonya ware made for the Chinese community around what used to be known as the Straits settlements, incorporating Singapore, Penang etc., which came under British control until 1947. Items like yours are characterised by bright colours and the phoenix bird, and are highly collectable. Your piece appears to be in good shape and the mark looks ok as many are faded or rubbed off. Nice.
