Subject:blue and white Ming stem cup or chinoiserie?
Posted By: Amy Mon, Jun 25, 2018 IP: 91.67.224.187

Hello porcelain enthusiasts,

I picked up a fun find at an estate sale in Germany yesterday. I have trolled the depths of the internet and found little about this stem cup. Could someone please help me identify it?

The cup is not marked and is a bit lopsided. I believe the blue decoration is hand painted and not transfered.

What makes me wonder if the cup is early chinoiserie are the three gold lines (heavily worn): one at the rim, one on the stem, and one at the foot. The width of these lines is inconsistent--differing by ~1.0mm at points.

Thanks so much for taking a look, I look forward to comments.

Hi, this is European, most likely German. The pattern is called "Strohblumenmuster" in German and was first used by Meissen. It is popular until today. Yours seems to have some age, but I am not expert enough to date it. It is not a stem cup but an egg holder. Thuringia produced a lot of porcelain with this patter, but without a mark it will be difficult to find a specific maker.
Best, Mat
PS: Your photos are way too large...

Hi Mat,

Thanks a lot for the info and for the tip on the photo size. Bigger is not always better—I will remember this in the future.

Even if I didn’t score a Ming piece this time it was fun to try.

Best,
Amy
