恭喜發財 - Happy New Year

This is the Chinese god of wealth, 財神, “cai shen” wishing all a prosperous new year.

Just to add some flavor, the New Year greeting 恭喜發財 would be heard up north around Beijing as "Gong xi fa cai" and in the southern Guangzhou-Hong Kong area as "Gung hei fat choi", literally meaning "Congratulations and may you become wealthy (in the New Year)".

Best regards,

Bill H.

And which version do you usually say to your friends and relatives, Bill H?

Actually, I have friends and friendly former in-laws in and around China who are facile in both dialects, but I've got to be circumspect using either expression around friends and family in the USA for fear they'll think I'm calling them "fat". Don't want to get slapped around. :(

Thanks Mike, TD, and Bill. After cross searching the characters with the word bronze statue I found others listing it as the god of wealth. Thanks for confirming this for me TD, and Bill, thanks for info pertaining to the greeting. Very cool
