Subject:Damaged 1800's canton famille rose gourd vase, any value?
Posted By: Brandon mccloskey Mon, May 07, 2018 IP: 173.188.16.27

This lovely vase has unfortunately sustained some significant damage in its life and I was wondering it still had any value? Also am I accurate on my description?

Your porcelain is best described as ROSE CANTON work. It was made in the 19th century and was very popular in the American market. Unfortunately a break with a less than expert repair does greatly diminish its value.

Thank you plasticman, it is unfortunate it was damaged and then repaired so roughly :/ Do you think it would be worth trying to sell, if so what kind of price would I expect with damage such as this?

I was reluctant to answer your question because the object is not in my prime collecting area. While I can discuss the age and form, I am afraid my knowledge of the economics of its' sale are not current. I suggest you follow the auction results where objects like yours come up for sale. I can share that in my prime collecting field, any porcelain that has been broken and has a less than almost invisible repair loses its value to the range of 60-70%. Great rarities aside, that is the reality of collector desirability. I would get a first class restoration done and live with the porcelain.
