Can anyone help me with the history of this vase? My great grandfather bought it an auction.

Greg,

SInce you asked me I've had any idea about this vase, let me try.
I could not find any match between existing Japanese characters and this signature.
So I have no idea what this means, probably Chinese. The footrim and the colors look Chinese, not Japanese, And the lady looks more like a Chinese lady than a Japanese.
So I think it's a Chinese vase.
SInce I'm not an expert on Chinese ware, this is all I can help you with,
Regards,
Martin.

Can't help with the mark, but the vase is Japanese, probably early-to-mid Showa period (1926-1989).

Best regards,

Bill H.
