Subject:Question about a kakemono scroll
Posted By: Luciano Fri, Apr 13, 2018 IP: 193.204.90.105

Hello,
I have recently bought the kakemono scroll in the attached pictures: please, I would like to know something more about it, such as where it is from (China or Japan?), the translation of the inscription and possibly the author.
Thanks a lot for your kind help and best regards,
Luciano

The painting and poem are related to the HanShan temple in SuZhou China. I am sure that the painting is Chinese.

Here is information about the temple and the poem.

Reading and translation of poem,
月落烏鳴霜満天
江楓漁火對愁眠
姑蘇城外舘山寺
夜半鐘聲到客船
The moon sinks,, the night crow caws
The sign of frost fills the sky
The riverside maples and fishermen's
ligts facing me in my worried sleep
The sound of bell from Hanshan temple, ouside of Gusu City, reaches the passanger ships

The above text is from the very famous poem of the Tang dynasty poet Zhang Ji (張繼)with the title
"Maple Bridge Night Mooring" (楓橋夜泊)

Signature reads,
畢瀧 - Bi Long (or Bi Shuang)
Seal reads,
畢瀧審定 - Approved by Bi Long (Bi Shuang)

Bi Long (Bi Shuang) Year of birth unknown/ died in 1797. Poet, calligrapher, landscape painter
and art collector of Qing period.

From the screen the scroll does not look over 200 years old.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear Imre,
thank you very much for having translated the text and also recognized the author!
I also believe that this is a copy, not an original painting of Qing period but I am very glad for your and Mike's answers.
Thank You so much!
Kind regards,
Luciano

Subject:New about the kakemono scroll
Posted By: Luciano Tue, Apr 17, 2018

Dear Imre,
looking better at the kakemono scroll, I have noticed a kind of signature by pen on the back at the end of the scroll.
I hope you may again help me and I send you two pictures because unfortunately I even do not know which is the upper part.
Thanks a lot and best regards,
Luciano

"Hanshan Temple", based on the poem and meant as a title for the picture

Sorry, I cannot decipher it.I think the one could only read who has written it. A sloppy signature of a previous owner.

I.Nagy

Hello,
thank you all for your further news.
About the pen writing, Imre, it is not important, it was just a curiosity: I also think that this writing could be a previous owner's signature.
Kind regards,
Luciano
